Plot Summary

Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda translates from Italian to The Combat of Tancredi and Clorinda. Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, SV 153, is an operatic scena for three voices by Claudio Monteverdi. The opera's libretto (story) comes from Torquato Tasso's La Gerusalemme Liberata

The story is a Romance set against the backdrop of the First Crusade of 1096–1099, when Godfrey of Bouillon conquered Jerusalem. It is about a Christian knight, Tancredi, and a Saracen girl, Clorinda, who are lovers; however, when they meet in battle, they do not recognise each other because their faces are covered by armour.

Tancredi hits Clorinda mortally, but he only realises who she is after removing her helmet. He baptises her before she dies, and she sees Heaven opening. A narrator, called testo in Italian, tells the majority of the story's action, with Tancredi and Clorinda literally battling to the death.
